familyman Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007  daughter had a paddy with her laptop as it was working a bit slow, threw it on the floor, and suprise suprise it won't work any more ( ring any bells mo4 ?)it'll start up,then goes to a grey screen where the message "cannot find operating system " flashes up ,pressing any of the "f" keys has no effect so i can't get into recovery mode, asked the guy in pc world and he recons the hard drive is knackered .Any ideas anyone ?just to top it off some of the keys have gone west as well ! i don't have a windows xp recovery disc so i can't re-install anything ,is it doomed or can it be economically fixed ? seatkid Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 strip it down and check for connectors that have come adrift (e.g. on the HDD) - hard disks are pretty robust and unlikely to be terminally damaged (although some data may be corrupt) Quote
familyman Posted January 19, 2007 Author Report Posted January 19, 2007  i shall give that a try-as captain oates said " i may be some time " Quote
NikpV Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007  i shall give that a try-as captain oates said " i may be some time " hopefully with more success  Quote
familyman Posted January 19, 2007 Author Report Posted January 19, 2007 sadly captain oates and i are having the same amount of luck ,no loose connections + on closer examination the screen is damaged -nice black streaks across it ,this doesn't look promising ! Quote
seatkid Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Try rebooting with a floppy/CD/USB - if you have one - MSDOS is always a dependable disk! Pull the connectors out and remake them, the flat ribbon to the LCD have a lock, unlock and pull the cable out. It takes a lot to kill an LCD screen, they even work (more or less) with smashed glass! jkspoff Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 Home and contents insurance/accidental damage may cover it, as it does mine. Worth a try, read the small print on your policy first to see what is and isn't covered. :) Quote

Worth a try, read the small print on your policy first to see what is and isn't covered. :lol:and any/amount of excess Dont forget to take into account any "no claims" you might have on your contents insurance. I had some kit damaged by lightning a few years ago and rang up about claiming. Was told I had to pay the first "x" amount so would only get "y" and that it would also affect my no claims. She told me what my renewal premium currenyl was per month and what it would be if I claimed. quick calculation revealed that 12 x difference was greater than "y" so I would be worse off. Seems like insurance is only worth having if you have a REALLY BIG claim to make. Robbing ******* :) Quote
familyman Posted January 21, 2007 Author Report Posted January 21, 2007 how come all your kids have laptops?? MJRjust the eldest has a laptop-which after further investigation is looking doomed ,more bloody money down the pan ! :) Quote

Either that statement is not totally accurate, or you are going to have to do all your computing assignments in your car. Seat will probably be more comfy though :) :( Quote
